The Elbert family moved to Freeport, in late 1942, and then to Lake Jackson in early 1943, where the Senior James Elbert and his brother-in-law, Scott R. Galbreath opened for business as the Brazosport Insurance Agency in 1947.This was the first Independent Insurance Agency in Lake Jackson.

In 1948, Elbert and Galbreath dissolved their partnership. They became Elbert Insurance Agency and Galbreath Insurance Agency, respectively. James M. Elbert operated the Elbert Insurance Agency until his death in 1975.Working with him in the agency was his wife, Nan, and his daughter, Mary Alice. His son, James P. Elbert, the current owner of Elbert Insurance Agency, joined them in the agency in 1971.

After the death of the Senior James Elbert in 1975, the agency was merged with the Bennett-Burnett Company. James P. and Mary Alice remained with the newly formed Bennett-Burnett-Elbert Company. Other owners were Douglas R. Bennett and Russell L. Burnett. This Agency continued until about 1978 when Mr. Burnett left the company and established another agency. The agency name then became Bennett-Elbert Company. After the death of Scott R. Galbreath in 1988, Bennett-Elbert Company purchased Galbreath Insurance Agency.

James P. resigned from Bennett-Elbert Company in April 1983 and moved to Galveston for a position with the Jahn-Austin Insurance Agency, as Vice President and General Manager.

In January 1995, James P. Elbert returned to Lake Jackson and purchased a portion of the book of business belonging to the Bennett-Elbert Company. He also purchased the name Elbert Insurance Agency and re-opened the Agency in that name. In August 1997, Steven Elbert, James’ son, joined the agency as a salesman and support person.

September 1998 brought an expansion of Elbert Insurance Agency - Brazoria Insurance Agency was purchased.  Both Elbert Insurance Agency and Brazoria Insurance Agency are now operated as branches under the name Insurco, Inc. The Brazoria Agency brought a new dimension of clients and service to the Brazoria County area. Steven Elbert has taken an active role in the management of the Brazoria Agency.

During 2007, the Elbert Insurance Agency celebrates its 60^th anniversary of service to the Brazoria County area. Both agencies, under the umbrella of Insurco, Inc., look forward to servicing the Brazoria area for many years to come.
